Massie’s bright amber eyes fluttered open as she took in the sight of her blue, tan, and black bedroom. Her purse was tossed haphazardly on the floor, her mannequin was dressed in a sparkly green and purple dress, and her phone was blinking on her bedside table. She threw the covers off of herself and grabbed her phone, checking her messages as she tiptoed around the Pretty Committee to reach the bathroom. There was one from Derrick wishing her good morning and one from Monica reminding instructing her to arrive at 8 o’clock tonight.
Massie quickly brushed her teeth and pulled her hair into a messy bun as she replied to her messages. Once she checked herself over in the mirror, she grabbed her phone and went to wake the Pretty Committee.
“Good morning!” She screamed loudly.
The girls stirred in their sleeping bags as they awoke, grumbling and complaining.
“Ehmagawd, what is wrong with you?” Alicia said groggily.
Massie smiled at her friend who was most definitely not a morning person.
“It’s ten am and we haven’t even ate breakfast yet! Monica is going to flip if we’re late to her party,” Massie scolded the girls even though it was her job to make sure they were up on time.
“What time is Jakkob coming over?” Claire asked as she pulled out her hand-me-down outfit Massie had gifted her as a Hello to Summer present.
“He’ll be here at five to do H&M. We still need to go to the mall though and get some final accessories for our outfits,” Massie said with an eyelash curler in one hand and mascara in the other.
“Yeah! I never found ruffled shoes to go with my dress,” Dylan replied.
“Well I already have my entire outfit ready,” Massie said proudly as she started at her mannequin.
Monica’s Masked party was supposed to have an element of illusion considering everyone had to wear a mask to get in the front door, but since everyone had been showing off their costumes for the past few weeks it would be impossible to stay anonymous. Massie had chosen a navy blue and emerald green peacock themed dress that had actual peacock feathers sewn into the satin. The feathers started at the sweetheart neckline and cascaded down her left side in an explosion of color while her mask matched her golden skin tone as more peacocks feathers surrounded her eyes.
“You dress is soooo pretty,” the girls chimed in.
She smiled and thanked them but deep down she was wondering if Derrick would like her dress. He hadn’t seen it yet. Massie instructed him to wear an emerald green shirt and she even bought him a peacock tie to match but he had yet to see it. With all the excitement around her she couldn’t help feel sick to her stomach.
“Let’s go get Starbucks! I want to try their new Peach Yogurt Parfait,” Massie demanded as the girls gathered their bags. She was determined to squash the butterflies in her stomach as she prepped herself, and the Pretty Committee, for party-perfection.
The Range Rover
“Did you see Skye’s tweet!” Alicia whispered into Massie’s ear, her hot breath making Massie jump.
“No, what’s it say?” Massie ripped her Beta’s phone out of her hand faster than Alicia could say “Ehmagawd!”
She scrolled through Skye’s recent tweets which was ridiculously long considering she was at a party, until she saw her name crush’s name mentioned.
“Soccer-Star Derrick Harrington arrived at Masked alone and without a date in sight… Run as fast as your Prada heels can carry you, girls!” Massie read Skye’s text aloud with a look of horror splashed all over her face. She pushed Alicia’s phone back into her lap and rolled down the car’s divide.
“Step on it, Isaac!” She screeched, her voice on edge.
The girls squealed as Isaac rounded a corner at record speed and pulled into Monica’s driveway. Massie pushed Claire out the car door while everyone hurriedly grabbed their purses and phones. As soon as Massie arrived at the front door she whipped around and looked over each girl’s face, dress, and hair one last time.
“Perfect! Masks on!” Massie asked quickly as she pulled her mask over her highlighted eyes and the girls followed suit.
Before the girls could blink, Massie was pushing open the door and stepping into the mix of flashing lights and pounding music. As soon as they stepped in behind her, they were disoriented. Monica’s house had been completely transformed from it’s original classic look to a romantic ballroom that took your breath away. The lights were dimmed with a strobe light blinking softly in the corner, there was a table fit for a Queen and King that was weighted down with crystal glasses and platters of appetizers, and there was a king and queen’s plush chair pushed against the side of the room that people were having their picture taken in.
Guests surrounded the girls in romantic costumes that were straight out of a story book. Everywhere Massie looked she saw Princesses and Queens and even the girls who dressed more modern blended in seamlessly. As they walked to the buffet table Massie couldn’t help but stare at some of the boy’s in cute knight’s uniforms and adorable tux’s. As the girls arrived at the food table, Massie picked up a crystal glass and sipped at the fruity, sweet drink.
“Let’s try and find the boys!” Massie screamed over the music.
The Pretty Committee nodded and followed Massie through the crowd in search of their crushes. Every time they turned a corner, people were saying hello, complimenting their outfits, and asking about their Summer plans. As wonderful as it was to catch up, Massie was not going to wait around for Skye to get bored with her current love affair and grab Derrick for a dance. As soon as the girls were alone Massie turned to them.
“What if the DSL Daters have found him! I don’t see the guys anywhere…” Massie bit her lip nervously.
“Don’t worry Massie! We’ll find them,” Alicia said reassuringly.
“Text them,” Kristen said, waving her phone.
Massie grabbed her phone out of her sequined clutch and started composing a text for Derrick when all of a sudden she felt a warm hand on her back. Without even looking she yelled at the masked figure, “Not interested!”
“Well, that’s a shame,” a sweet voice said behind her.
She whipped her head around and couldn’t help but squeal.
“I was wondering where you guys were. The party started half n’ hour ago,” he said accusingly.
“It took us a little longer to get ready than expected,” Claire said with a smile.
Massie tied the peacock tie around Derrick’s neck and laughed as he pretended she was choking him. He smiled when he saw his tie matched his dress and discreetly whispered, “You look gorgeous,” in her ear. Her face lit up with a smile.
“Have you seen Skye?” Massie asked nonchalantly.
“I haven’t seen her, but I saw her tweet. Is that why you’re asking?” Derrick stared questioningly into Massie’s eyes.
“Oh, she tweeted about you? What’d she say?” Massie scrunched up her eyebrows with a look of curiosity.
“Nothing important. Let’s dance!” Derrick grabbed her hand and pulled her onto the dance floor. Massie saw the other girls following with their crushes, hand in hand, and she knew she could relax for a moment. As they were walking to the dance floor, Massie spotted Skye talking to a guy she didn’t recognize.
“Hey Skye! Great party, right?” Massie said in an overly-excited voice. Skye looked shocked for a moment but quickly composed herself.
“Hey Massie! I was wondering when you were going to get here!” Skye said hugging her.
“Me and the girls were still getting ready and then I got Derrick this cute tie to match my dress. You like it?” Massie asked with a raised eye brow.
“Yeah…. It’s adorable.” Skye said as she adverted her eyes.
“Well we’re going to dance. See ya’!” Massie chimed and ran off with Derrick in tow. She couldn’t help but smile at the Pretty Committee who were all laughing at her and Skye’s exchange. Right as Derrick grabbed her waist, Katy Perry’s “Firework” blasted over the sound system and she couldn’t help but jump into his arms. As he spun her around Massie glanced up at the stars twinkling in Monica’s skylight.
When Derrick set her back down she smiled into his eyes as he twisted his hands into hers.
“Maybe you’re the reason why all the doors are closed”
“So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road”
“Like a lightning bolt, your heart will blow”
“I love you”
“And when it’s time, you’ll know.”
